There are many aspects to your website that you might not have thought of as yet. The core issue here is that you will need to address all aspects to have a successful web presence. This usually means that some parts you will want to do yourself and some parts you might be better of outsourcing. I would recommend to read my article on “When to DIY and When to Outsource” to help you making a decision early on in what parts of your web presence you will DIY an which you will outsource now or down the track.
But now to your web presence. By the way I use web presence as a term that covers all aspects of your website and all those others issues that determine if it will be a success ot not.
The aspects of your Web Presence are:
- Is it a blog or more a corporate stlye website you need
- Your website frame work / Content management system (CMS)
- Choosing and registering a domain name(s) and hosting your websisste
- Your website appearance or design, also called skin, theme or template
- Generating your text, audio and video content and keeping it up to date
- The Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
- How will you monetize your website and how can customers buy and pay (payment gateway and shopping cart)
- Your traffic strategy
- Your Pay Per Click (PPC) strategy on Google and other relevant search engines
- Your social media strategy
- Management of user generated content (FAQs, article / post comments and testimonials
- Website analytics
- Building a list and keeping in touch with your customers / members
- Becoming a merchant and or affiliate and promoting this
- Your internet marketing strategy
Now if your web presence is nothing else then an online brochure and support site for your existing offline products then some aspects might not apply to you however for the majority of us we have a web presence to promote and sell as well as support our products and services online. This means all 15 aspects will apply to us and all will need to be addressed. Some aspects you might already have addressed eg you have already got a domain name and have hosted your site however to ensure a successful web presence all aspects deserve at least a brief review and for each aspect you will need to decide if you will DIY or outsource this aspect. And some other issues that might or might not apply to you:
- Inventory management
- Integration to offline applications such as acounting or inventory control
- The purpose of your site if it’s not there to support and enhance your existing business.
- Do you need a forum (for support), or a download area to supply updates or similar?
